Atheist Angina - A Parable

Imagine.

His heart has stopped beating. He lies on the ground while you administer chest compressions. These compressions are pumping the blood through his body and keeping him alive. Each compression feeds his cells with renewed momentary life. He is conscience, on his back, staring up at you, surprisingly complacent, if not a little cheerful. He feels good … seemingly unaware that without you, he’d be dead.

Someone somewhere has called an ambulance. It’s likely on its way. You’re focusing on your rhythm when he speaks to you.

“F***off”.

You look at his face, while continuing to give him life. Your look is perplexed, questioning.

He starts to raise his right hand and swats at your arms, which are rhythmically flexing downward on his sternum.

“Don’t touch me you dirty bugger! Leave me alone!”

You ignore his insolence and continue to keep him alive.

He grabs your arm and begins to weakly, very weakly, try and push you away. He then pinches at your forearm and tries to scratch you with his nails.

“Don’t!” You implore him. Is he insane? If you stop he’s dead. He needs you or he’s dead. You are literally sustaining, maintaining his life.

He spits up towards your face and starts laughing. Then he calls your mother names.

What a sick, twisted, and stupid person.

He bares his teeth and reaches his head towards your leg, snapping like a rabid pitbull, and you wonder a solemn truthful thought, a small thought from deep within your head: why am I keeping him alive?

He can’t seem to reach your leg with his mouth, so he snaps his teeth at you instead, biting at the air that fills the gap between you two. All the while drooling like a madman. Intermittently between snaps, he slurs, “I hate you .. leave me alone .. I hate you .. I want to enjoy my day .. get lost”.

This is what the Bible calls a child of this world. This particular beast is called an atheist.

He wars against that which gives him life. There is no greater fool than this.

While the Almighty holds the very fabric of existence together, and actively wills this person to exist, wills this person to breathe, wills them to live … this pathetic man, this poor dimwitted ignoramus, shouts his obscenities at God; self-deluding himself that it is possible to live without his Creator. You can ignore the man giving you CPR, you can even resent or hate him, but you can’t live without him.

Repent friend; Before God loses His patience with you … and walks away.

Job 33:4 “The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life”. (NIV)

Isa 55:6  “Seek the LORD while he may be found”. (ESV)

Proverbs 21:16  “If you stop using good sense, you will find yourself in the grave”. (CEV)
